The Shadow-Eater was Benjamin De Casseres’ first book. Originally published in 1915 by Albert & Charles Boni, it contained 46 poems written between 1902-1906, as indicated by a line at the bottom of the last page.
A second printing by Wilmarth Publishers came out in 1917; a revised edition was published by the American Library Service in 1923, which removed one poem and added a frontispiece by Marius de Zayas, a preface by Don Marquis, and mid-volume illustration by Wallace Smith.

1923 Revised Edition (American Library Service)
The 1923 edition includes a new preface by Don Marquis, a fellow columnist in the New York papers and popular magazines for which De Casseres frequently wrote. The revised edition also contains a frontispiece illustration by Marius de Zayas (first published in Camera Work, January 1910), and an illustration after “The Dead Who Live” (p. 28) by Wallace Smith.
Minor text changes occur throughout, including new line and stanza breaks, capitalization or emphasis changes, and punctuation. A handful of word changes are made as well. Specific text changes are indicated on the page for each individual poem (see Contents below).

1907 Bound Manuscript of The Shadow-Eater
In 2024, a redditor posted to /r/OldBooks images of a bound manuscript version of The Shadow-Eater that they acquired. Based on the images posted, the bound version was apparently assembled by Carlo De Fornaro. According to the table of contents, it does not appear to contain the first poem included in the printed version, “The Protagonist,” which is a verse dedication to Fornaro himself.

- Profile and portrait sketches of De Casseres, presumably by Fornaro, pasted from another notebook
